Palm-Reading_12v3Palm Reading: Malibu, Point Mugu

Music Review for New Age CD, New Age Notes Radio, Zone Music Reporter (ZMR), and “Spirit Seeker Magazine

Do plants have a voice? Sure, they do. And we can prove it. “Palm Reading” is a new ambient musical project inspired by plant life.

The brainchild of sound designer and composer Skooby Laposky, and guitar player, keyboard player, and producer, Charles Copley, the recordings on “Palm Reading” are a “combination of synthesized electronic music generated by biodata recorded from plants using a biodata sonification device, as well as ambient field recordings and original acoustic guitar accompaniment.”

So, the 3 tracks on this 15-minute release are literally “powered” by the plants. It is their voice here. So interesting, is it not? This particular release is the location, Malibu: Point Mugu. I surmise – hopefully correctly – that this location is where the actual plants are physically located and where they were recorded in their natural “voice.” Guitar and soft synth are incorporated around these plant voices, all making for a very beautiful recording.

The 3 tracks included here are: “White Sage (Salvia Apiana),” “White Sage (Salvia Apiana) Interlude,” and “Laurel Sumac (Malosma Laurina),” in that order. Calming ocean sounds, gentle guitar, and soothing synth accompany the plant voice on “White Sage (Salvia Apiana).” This is SO relaxing and meditative. Ambient, too, yes, but there is a melody and a cohesiveness to the composition. Gorgeous.

The brief 1-1/2 minute “Interlude” is more of the same, and again, ultra-relaxing and ethereal. Beautiful. Images springing up in the imagination of clean, green plants softly blowing in the breeze bring instant tranquility to the mind, body, and spirit.

Laurel Sumac is a fragrant, flowering shrub that grows in southern California predominantly near the coastline. By the way, I find it interesting to note that laurel sumac is one of the first plants to re-sprout after a fire. It’s a very pretty plant, as is its “voice” here on “Laurel Sumac (Malosma Laurina).”  I wouldn’t expect anything else. Beautifully beautiful.  Super gentle guitar, serene ocean sounds, and heavenly synth along with this plant’s voice, all make a superbly meditative and dreamy composition. Aaaah. . .California dreamin’. . .

I can hardly wait for the next installment of this project.
